In Every Room

Artist

Beth Rodway

“You could call my paintings a visual diary. I’ve never been good with words so my paintings act in place of that. I paint places that hold memories for me, where I can get close enough to really see how the light hits the curtain or a drape hits on a chair. I like to include depictions of sold works that live in my collectors’ homes in my paintings, it’s a way of establishing relationships between different bodies of works.” BR

Beth Rodway’s richly coloured miniature paintings combine her fascination with interiors, mid-century influences, and images and objects that hold personal significance to her at that given moment. Beth’s self-referential paintings build playful narratives connecting the artist and the world she creates. ‘Pink Tulips’ features open books sprawled on the checkered bathroom floor, the books referencing those open on Beth’s studio desk at the time. A rendition of ‘Reading Room’ adornes the bathroom wall of ‘Pink Tulips’. ‘40 Love’ features two earlier paintings that now live in the homes of her collectors.

Beth lives by the sea in East Sussex. Growing up surrounded by carpentry pieces made by her dad she developed an obsession with drawing and making from a young age. She received a BA in Architecture in 2014 (where she fell in love with buildings) and a Postgraduate degree from the Royal Drawing School in 2018. During her student and early years of founding her practice she concentrated on drawing detailed interior spaces yet has more recently moved her practice into painting, focussing on acrylics on canvas.
